Why Strip Clubs Are Better Than Internet Porn?

Let’s start with the first component of the argument: that people won’t pay to see naked girls at strip clubs when they can see unlimited naked girls online for free.

You just can’t substitute seeing naked women up close and in person with looking at a girl on a 20” computer screen (or on your TV). You can’t touch girls on the Internet, nor can you talk to them or have them touch you. Besides, I spend enough time on my computer (at work, checking emails/Facebook, reading news sites plus random Internet surfing, etc.); I don’t want my leisure time to also include starring at a screen. Strip clubs offer me a chance to get out of the house and look at beautiful, topless women. Even though it’s not really a social event (but it can be), it’s still more social than sitting at home.

The follow-up argument for pornography is that online porn is more accessible. Anyone with an Internet connection can access porn. And it’s easier to get on your computer than it is to drive to a strip club. Plus, most of it is free.

My counter-argument to that would be that most strip club visits are planned anyway, so accessibility doesn’t matter that much. I usually plan my strip club visits in advance. Whether it’s the day of, the night before, or beginning of the week – the decision to head to a strip club is made well in advance. Occasionally I’ll head out to Bourbon Street with friends, go bar hopping, and decide to head to Penthouse on the fly, but that doesn’t happen often. Strip club visits are like an event to me. It’s an expensive event, so I always plan everything out to make sure I have fun. Nobody pre-plans looking at porn. Can you imagine anyone thinking “man, I can’t WAIT to get off work and spend my Friday night porno browsing by myself…all alone”? Most people who spend time looking at porn are either bored or have nothing better to do. But they certainly don’t plan to make an evening of it. There is no social aspect to viewing pornography.

There is one final argument I would make to show that Internet pornography does not pose a real threat to strip clubs, and that argument is that many strip club customers don’t go strictly for sexual reasons. The appeal of strip clubs, for some, is not topless or nude women. It’s not stage shows and lap dances. Not even VIP rooms and the chance of extras. It’s about female companionship. I stumbled upon this website titled Letters from Men Who Go to Strip Clubs. The site/blog’s author and creator says she wanted to uncover men’s fascination with strippers and strip clubs (beyond the obvious). She wanted to know men’s psychological reasons behind visiting and spending so much money at strip clubs. The answers may or may not surprise you. While it’s expected that some men said their primary interest was seeing beautiful half-naked women, knocking back a few beers, and hanging out with friends – they didn’t represent the majority. More men preferred conversation and companionship over erotic thrills.

Tangent Alert! Don’t bother reading if you’ve heard this argument before and/or don’t buy it.

I can understand why guys who have trouble speaking with women or who don’t date much would frequent strip clubs. First, they probably feel their only opportunity to talk to beautiful girls, let alone see them naked, is at a strip club. They may also be afraid to talk to girls in general. Visiting strip clubs can simulate real life dating for some guys – minus the fear of rejection (unless you’re a total perv or just creepy, the girls will sit and talk and/or ask for a dance). Think about it this way. You go to a strip club, a girl introduces herself, you introduce yourself, you have drinks, chat for awhile, and maybe she asks you to go upstairs with her. Then she takes her clothes off. It’s easy to see how some guys could mistake this for genuine interest or some kind of connection. Even though the customers are paying the girls to disrobe, the process of meeting a dancer mimics being on a date or just hanging out – to a degree. I can understand how customers think the connection “feels” real. A girl outside the strip clubs won’t get naked for you unless there’s a certain level of comfort between you and her. I’m not saying the only circumstances are when there’s an intimate relationship or something, but even casual sex and one-night stands have a certain level of trust/comfort between the two. Does anyone strip for someone they met two minutes ago and without knowing at least one thing about them? Not often. So when a stripper undresses for a customer, is it that hard to believe that said (delusional) customer thinks he’s reached a certain comfort level with her?

Tangent over.

I won’t get too deep in the “why” of why customers go to strip clubs, but it’s not always about just seeing topless/naked women. Some people claim it’s an “escape” from life outside the club. A chance to drink and watch naked women without worrying about life’s problems. Others say it’s therapeutic – that being able to vent their frustrations to beautiful, attentive (and naked) women helps them cope. Some are trying to substitute real relationships with strip club visits, or are trying to fill the void left from a lack of companionship with the opposite sex. And that’s where porn can never replace strip clubs. Nobody combats loneliness and social isolation with porn. Boredom, maybe, but not that. If anything, porn can make people feel even more isolated than they already are.
